FROM THE EDITOR
Midlife WHAT?

We hope you enjoyed April’s Anxiety and Depression newsletter. This month we thought it was important to address the issues of depression and anxiety in middle-aged men and women.
Just as we want to provide you with information on the benefits of natural remedies regarding different aspects of systemic health and well-being, we also want to address the needs you have during specific times in your life.
Many things have been said about menopausal women. However, when you become one of those women experiencing the debilitating symptoms of perimenopause, there isn’t a wealth of information available to help you cope.
In this newsletter, we explore hot flashes, depression and anxiety in menopause. We also provide tips to help your body manage the hormonal changes that cause these symptoms.
Find out how menopause affects your mood >>
Although not as widely discussed, men also go through what is commonly referred to as a “midlife crisis”. People often joke about them buying sports cars or completely uprooting their lives...
But just as a decrease in the female hormone estrogen causes symptoms in women at the end of their reproductive stage, declining levels of testosterone in men during midlife also affects mood and physical health, and impacts diverse aspects of their lives.
Find out if male menopause actually exists, and if so, what can be done about it >>
Finally, we want to provide useful tips to help you, or a loved one, to cope with the stressors of everyday life - thereby supporting health in a holistic way. We firmly believe that a healthy lifestyle, combined with nature’s wealth of resources, can help you achieve optimal health and balance.

As always, we’d love to receive your feedback on our newsletter, and any thoughts or suggestions you may have. Thank you for choosing Native Remedies, and remember to check out next month’s newsletter for more useful information that we’re sure will greatly benefit you and your family.

Are You Crossing a Midlife Bridge?
How Menopause Can Affect Your Mood
Change can be a wonderful thing; but not all changes are welcomed, especially when it’s “the change” and can cause havoc in a woman’s body and emotional state.
Studies show that by age 51 the average woman is entering menopause - between 47 and 55 is normal - and nearly 20 percent of these women will experience symptoms of depression and/or anxiety... that’s 1 in 5 women.

Does Male Menopause Really Exist?
While menopause is a very common term, both readily accepted and generally understood to be a normal part of a woman’s life, "male menopause" has become somewhat of a flippant phrase and nearly an urban myth.
Similar to the decline in estrogen experienced by perimenopausal women, men also experience a decline in testosterone as they approach midlife.

QUESTION 1
"I've had trouble sleeping for about a year... do you have any natural alternatives to [help]?"
-Mary Ann Hutto
ANSWER
Hi Mary Ann,
We can highly recommend our SerenitePlus™ and Serenite-LT™.
While SerenitePlus will induce drowsiness when taken, Serenite-LT is a long term remedy which works on addressing underlying causes of lost sleep.
SerenitePlus is a combination herbal/homeopathic formula that has been used safely and effectively for many years to help promote restful sleep.
Serenite-LT is an effective long-term solution to discourage sleep disturbances. With regular use, results should be noted within 3 - 5 weeks.
During this initial period while Serenite-LT is taking effect, many people like to use our SerenitePlus Drops to induce a pleasant sense of relaxation and drowsiness before bedtime.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
Warm regards,

QUESTION 2
"I read on some website that depression can be caused by a serotonin deficit in the brain. What I need is clarification on where this serotonin is produced, its role on the brain, and its connection to depression. Thank you."
- Zishwili Mbongeni
ANSWER
Hi Zishwili,
Serotonin is a hormone and is found in the pineal gland, blood platelets, the digestive tract and the brain. Serotonin acts both as a chemical messenger that transmits nerve signals between nerve cells and that causes blood vessels to narrow.
Changes in the serotonin levels in the brain can alter the mood. For example, medications that affect the action of serotonin are used to treat depression.
While allopathic medicines are often given for the treatment of depression, natural medicine in the form of herbs is popular and effective. St John's Wort (Hypericum) is one of the most well-known natural treatments for depression.
