The Holidays are Almost Here, But Have No Fear!
The holidays are a favorite time of the year for many, but for those with family members who have ADD/ADHD or deal with it personally, it can also mean a time of chaos. A myriad of events, gifts to purchase, and family time can wreak havoc on routines and cause the holidays to be a time of incredible stress. Thankfully, there are a few simple things you can do to better cope with holiday madness.
Be realistic about what you can do.
It's normal for life's pace to pick up during the holidays but that doesn't mean you have to do everything. Setting practical expectations about what you can accomplish is your first step. Make a list of basic things that must get done such as gift shopping and dinner with your parents or in-laws.
Keep a visual aid handy to track events and plans. A calendar is great for this purpose and allows you to save face by helping you to remember to accept or decline invitations. Don't be hard on yourself for saying no to certain things. You're entitled to spend time at home with your children or have some time alone relaxing with a book.
Adults and teens, try Focus ADDult™ to promote concentration, focus and attention span. For children, try Focus Formula™ to support concentration and attention, while promoting normal energy levels. For added support, BrightSpark™ is a homeopathic remedy that relieves hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsiveness in children with learning disorders.
Simplify where you can.
Take the stress out of selecting gifts by buying gift certificates or doing shopping online. Gift certificates are a great gift, as they are available to suit almost any age, interest and budget (and don't forget about Native Remedies gift certificates!). Coupled with the great deals available after Christmas, it's hard to go wrong.
If you actually know what the person wants, why not purchase it online? Many sites even offer free shipping and returns, so there's no extra expense incurred. Shopping online is a breeze compared to dealing with holiday–crazed malls and parking lots.
Take a few nights off a week from cooking and order take out. It may not be cheap, but having some extra time for yourself is priceless. Just make sure to maintain your normal eating and sleeping schedules in order to not disturb the nervous system.
Try PureCalm™, which works quickly to facilitate a calmed mood and soothed nerves.
If you travel, keep it simple.
The holidays are the busiest travel season of the year. That is stressful in itself, ADD/ADHD or not. However, there are some things you can do in advance to minimize stress.
If you travel for the holidays every year, keep some basic items ready in your suitcase. A travel bag with toiletries can be kept ready to go. A bag with essentials such as pajamas, underwear, a pair of sneakers, cotton tees, and a sweater can also be kept together and simply moved in a suitcase when needed. If this is too much of an effort, simply make a list of the basic items you for every trip, then customize depending on where you're going, events, etc.
Don't forget CanTravel™ to help maintain digestive comfort during travel by air, sea, or car and Easy AirTravel™, a homeopathic remedy that relieves the fear, nervousness, anxiety and panic attacks associated with flying.
Don't forget the finishing touches!
As always, natural remedies can give you that extra support needed to keep it all together. Be sure to remember to pack these essentials if you are traveling! Many herbs for example, have been used for thousands of years to support health and maintain well–being.
The maidenhair tree, also known as ginkgo biloba, is derived from one of the oldest trees on earth. Recent studies support its effectiveness in enhancing memory, particularly in older patients with age-related memory loss and forgetfulness, among other benefits.
Skullcap is a nervous system tonic that helps to support equilibrium and contributes to the maintenance of a healthy attitude. Active ingredients include flavonoids, tannins, bitter, volatile oil and minerals. Scutellaria lateriflora was recently studied with regards to its supportive ability on relaxed mood and calmness.
Gotu cola has been used for many years as a tonic to support the healthy brain and nervous system. This herb is recommended to support brain functions such as mental clarity and healthy memory as well as to maintain a balanced mood.
No matter how much you plan your holidays out, be ready for unpredictable things to happen. Keeping your sense of humor is essential to surviving and thriving during this wonderful time of the year!
Be sure to stay consistent with dosage of natural remedies during the holiday break.
As herbal and homeopathic remedies work to support balance in the body, taking a 'break' may leave you or your child at a disadvantage when school or work begins again, with the first few weeks spent trying to get back the full therapeutic effect.
In addition, consider having extra doses of remedies where recommended when additional support is needed, especially during late nights of festivities!
